Starting with a new provider is easier when you know what's ahead.
Your first visit with a new provider sets the foundation for your ongoing care. It's usually a little longer than a routine follow-up, since your provider is getting to know your health for the first time. Here's what typically happens, and how to make the most of it.
Before you arrive
You'll likely be asked to fill out some paperwork, either online or in person, covering your medical history, current medications, and insurance details. Filling this out ahead of time, if possible, can help your appointment start smoothly.
Building your health history
A large part of your first visit is dedicated to understanding your background: past illnesses, surgeries, family health history, and any ongoing conditions. This gives your provider the full picture they need to care for you going forward.
Talking through your current health
Your provider will ask about how you're feeling generally, any symptoms or concerns, and aspects of your lifestyle like sleep, diet, exercise, and stress. Being open here helps them tailor their guidance to your actual day-to-day life.
A physical exam
Depending on your age and health needs, your provider may perform a basic physical exam, checking things like your blood pressure, heart rate, and other general indicators of health.

Discussing preventive care
Your first visit is also a good time to talk about which screenings or vaccinations make sense for you, based on your age, history, and risk factors. Your provider can help you build a preventive care plan going forward.
Asking your own questions
This appointment is as much for you as it is for your provider. It's worth asking about anything you're curious about, whether that's a specific symptom, a family health pattern, or general advice on staying healthy.
What to bring with you
A few things can help your first visit go smoothly:
A form of identification
Your insurance information
A list of current medications and supplements
Any past medical records you have access to
Building a habit of physical wellbeing
Alongside your visit, small everyday habits support the foundation your provider is helping you build. A few worth focusing on:
Moving your body regularly, even in short bursts
Prioritizing consistent, quality sleep
Eating a varied, balanced diet
Staying hydrated throughout the day
After your appointment
Once your visit wraps up, your provider will typically outline any next steps, whether that's a recommended test, a follow-up visit, or general guidance to start putting into practice.
